Introductory Session
Some thoughts after our zoom meeting:
I was very excited about our very first zoom meeting. I did however take an interesting turn when I realised that we would be experiencing load-shedding (power outage) in my area during the time that we would meet. I had to rush and find a restaurant that would have a generator and wifi and be quiet enough for me to have a zoom meeting. Luckily everything went well and it was fun and interesting to meet the other students as well as our tutors.
It was insightful to get an overview of what it means to study at an MA level and some of the key points that I am most excited about are:
– Developing and honing your own creative voice
• Taking risks
• Undertaking research
• Being Critical
• Being Contextually aware
• Undertaking systematic and rigorous learning
• Communication of ideas
• Professional development
• Independence
All of them really!
We spoke about the importance of this research journal. I aim to use this as a place to put any creative idea, to brainstorm here and to re-see what it is that I make in my art practice. I like the idea of building a language with which to communicate and voice as I try to make journaling here a habit. I realise that this MA will ask for a lot of commitment and self motivation along with a curious spirit.
Finally we were asked to think of 3 words that best describe our art practice and what we want it to be. It was hard to boil it down to only 3 words and in hindsight I thought of better words but my 3 words were:
- PROCESS – I am interested in the process of art-making as oppose to solely the outcome of the product.
- EMOTION – The relationship between thoughts and emotions and truth fascinate me. Also distraction vs focus. Chaos vs simplicity.
- COMMUNITY – I have a deep desire to make a difference through my art practice and I am still trying to think of ways in which to do so. I hope the answers will become clearer as I continue on this 2 year journey.
Looking forward to the next few weeks!
