I was good to get an introduction to the Contextual Study and Literature Review. Indeed a challenge to firstly decide what it is that you want to research (what is important to me) and secondly – where to find relevant information that is credible and interesting.
How to create a melting pot of theory and practice…melting criticality and practice and to keep the balance. That is the challenge. First I need to understand what my work is about, what is it saying. Then I guess I need to fins who else is saying similar things. In other words, what is the relationship between my work and the ideas and theories that inform it.
Some notes from the lecture:
- Write with my work. Not inhibiting the making but identifying what drives it and then to put it in this research journal and in my sketchbook.
- The purpose of the research journal is to reflect and to connect to other ‘thinkers’ that you relate to.
We looked at the work of a few artists and one that I liked most was the work of Maria Bussmann. I love her interest in the unseen and collaborates with reading philosophy. Catching it’s essence. She predominantly works in pencil which is a medium that I also enjoy because of it’s simplicity.
(I would like to a to this post in the near future)
