(My Tutorial report)
Reflections since last tutorial (if applicable)
Since our last tutorial, I feel that my focus has become more narrow and I have been able to find contexts that I can fit into. I have more of a clear vision of what I am a part of in the wider world of contemporary art and critical debates.
I also feel more ready to take on the unknown as I proceed into more practical work whereas before, I felt a little bit lost and uninspired to start any practical work. It was as-if I first needed a wider perspective – a birds-eye view before delving into practical work. I have have come to know other artists that inspire me and have been reading relevant literature that helps me articulate what my main concerns and interests are.
Overall feedback notes from tutorial discussion
As always, my chat with Michele was delightful and helpful and she was both a wonderful soundboard and guide with all her insight and experience.
We talked about my general direction and Michele mentioned that the word CARE comes through strongly and regularly in my documentation. She suggested that I read: ‘Matters of care’ by Maria Puig del la Bellacasa. I have made a note of this and will certainly read it.
‘Art as experience’ by John Dewey is a book I asked Michele about and she said it can be a good one to refer to and she has done so in the past.
‘Vibrant matters’ is another book I can add to my list.
Another paper that she mentioned was ‘Method meets art’ by Patricia Leavy as well as the work of Maria Lind.
Other than that Michele invited me to look at the Drawing exercise that starts on the 18th of October. It might inspire me to take up an active drawing practice.
A question I had for Michele was regarding Audience. I felt unclear about how I felt about audience and what my options were. I know a gallery was the more obvious option and at the back of my mind I did have a few fleeting thoughts about positioning/exhibiting my work in nature and do an outdoor exhibition. So I was happy when Michele also brought up the idea.
She said that I could think of audience as a verb which made me think of perhaps having an outdoor exhibition where people are encouraged to take part and participate in the art exhibited. Almost to collaborate with each other and with nature. I like this idea and I will give it some more thought.
Action points arising from the tutorial
- Getting hold of the books that I don’t yet have.
- Focus on doing more practical work and not to get suck on the theoretical side of things seeing that they are all there and in place now. The rest of the direction to be taken will come out of the practical work.
- Continue documenting as I am already doing.
- Looking up some of the artists who’s names Michele will email to me.
